Time has not changed the past and Patrick Reid remains dead by tiny Corolla bump. During Puberty Blues they sneak peeked at the first scene of Season 5.
And while I'm still on the fence about if and when I'll recap this last season, I gotta admit I enjoyed this teaser. Tonally it felt more reverentially to Patrick's character than anything else before it. It played well the Proudman family connection that they all have and it was moving. And DAMN that baby is CUTE! Patrick's offspring (so intended) certainly is a good one.
I still am concerned that a show that had it's viewers invest so much in Nina's love story, is going to give us a rushed happily ever after with a new dude. Nina as a character was never better than when Patrick was there to balance her out and I'm still concerned that she'll return to zany, Proudman hijinks without the grounding that a tragic event such as this would give the character. Time will tell and with the months of interesting interviews and producers calls for calm, you have to wonder, if the show can't recover - will Matt Le Nevez be smirking somewhat proudly to himself?
For me the preview was flat, not really interested in a show about a weepy woman with.a baby, no matter now cute the baby
ReplyDeleteI agree, Pam. This 'teaser' hasn't teased me in the least and hasn't hooked me in the way all previous seasons did.
ReplyDeleteI guess I'm simply done with Offspring.
Felicity, I have to agree that the baby is cute. She is not blonde, so I'm glad they've chosen a girl who is meant to share the same physical traits as her father. But that's about all I liked.
They lost this (previously) loyal viewer.

ReplyDeleteNew 'sneak' peak.
The teaser was suprisingly good. It felt honest. I think we might see some of Asher's best acting....
ReplyDeleteAlso I saw the new sneak peak and again i found myself getting emotional. Could just be that I have had a baby and now can't help but imagine how I would cope..... Oh how I miss Patrick already... I think i will need tissues a bit this season.
However I do share the fear that they are going to now rush a happy ending.
Yes Fee, I get the feeling that Season 5 will be the end of Offspring and that they'll try to wrap everything up too neatly. Tried to watch Season 3 again today, but couldn't do it :(
ReplyDeleteThere will be such a huge hole without Patrick. I cried too Fee.
So sad.
The therapist...
Really??
Hi, I only just came across your post. I felt similarly conflicted but knew instantly I was going to be in watching it - until I saw Dr Lawrence....as a therapist you can't have relationships with your patients/ clients its an ethical no-no and you get struck off your professional register. so if the story is going that way its a big problem for me...I don't think I will be able to get past it. its a common plot of so many movies involving therapists but in reality its very unlikely and totally not ok
ReplyDeleteMy big call for this season is Ange and Clegg. That would make me happy.
ReplyDeleteAnd I still think Nina will end up with the recipient of one of Patrick's organs.
Or maybe Fitzroy Jesus.
ReplyDeleteI hate to say it Jenny but I'd prefer a return of Fitzroy Jesus as the love interest. i'm thinking now it won't be dr Lawrence as surely they wouldn't give away the love interest in the promo - its got to be a red herring..
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a red herring as you'll find out on Wednesday nite x Will be interesting to see how the ratings go. I think lots of people will tune into in out of interest but wonder if they'll keep watching? Still pis*ed off with how it all ended. Thank god we have Love Child to look forward to nxt year :)
ReplyDeletewell that's a relief. I didn't get a chance to watch the episode in advance due to other commitments but that's one spoiler I am happy to hear
ReplyDeleteI thought it was such a beautiful episode. nice balance of funny and tears. and the scene with Lawrence was too good. I'm wondering if they will ever mention Darcy again?
ReplyDeleteI suupose that this isn't going to win me any popularity contests but I just couldn't get on board with this episode. I wasn't planning on watching season 5 but some of the previews had me intrigued. The beginning was lovely and moving, The return to work was cute, So much of the episode revolving around Nina;s sex life or lack of totally put me off. Going into that in the first episode? Only 6 months after her partner's death? It did not sit well with me, They should have left that for later in the season. Given , having her imagine Patrick was moving, but that was all. More scenes of the mommy and baby experiences would have been enough for me. I felt the episode was comprised of jigsaw pieces that didn't really fit the puzzle.
ReplyDeletewhat would Offspring be without Kat Stewart? I thought she was fantastic as billie in episode 2. It was so hard to be sympathetic to billie last season but she is in fabulous form this season. Bringing Brendan back was an interesting move from the writers. Asher's acting skills were so fine in that final scene with him - made up for the ridiculous arm flapping in the Zara scenes.
ReplyDeleteI concur with you Nadene, that episode 2 was really good, largely because of Kat Stewart. I found it way more convincing to watch than the first episode and thought the proposal scene was lovely and Nina's reaction was heart wrenching.
ReplyDeleteIf the next few episodes has this quality to them, I can see myself watching season 5, even without Matt Le Nevez.
"MLN in UMB....and if they airdrop Danny (aka real life Patrick) into S5 of Offspring I might watch!"
ReplyDeleteSo that did happen! I like Patrick Brammall a lot, imo cute as but not as conventionally hot as MLN for the fangirls. And a better actor. Might help O on 10 to have a non-stud muffin lead.
Personally outgrown the show. And it has little to do with Patrick's death. If PB sticks around maybe I will watch when he has more of a part. Maybe.
PS: The Brendan scene was the best part of S1 too.
I thought I had outgrown it but obviously not. I think i'm going to see it through til the end of this series. there is for me a tiredness creeping into some of the characters stories but I'm finding this journey nina is on - the sincere moments - anyway very compelling, although it does make me tear up everytime. So thank goodness for Kat so I can laugh. interesting to see how the Patrick Brammall story goes. I remember him from The Alice. The social media stuff is saying no more Patrick flashbacks after episode 3 so I guess there will be more letting go and moving on in the story assuming that is true.
DeleteAnd Patrick Brammall returns later in the season as a nurse (I think) who happens to work at the hospital...
ReplyDeleteFinding it hard to get into this season, and I would literally stop everything every Wednesday nite to watch. I have it on in the background but that's about it.
I see Deb Oswald is doing the rounds again, defending Season 4 choices...
I know Nadene. And Kat Stewart does so many varied roles. Just give her the Gold Logie already.
ReplyDeleteThe promos are turning me off. Jimmy and Zara, yawn. Throw together two random characters (Billie and Lawrence). OTT Nina. Nina's lovelife and people with foots in their mouth. A bit of Patrick for the fangirls. I feel like they are recycling old ideas. Though I concede the episodes may be better.
Lisym I don't see why they are defending S4. TV characters die. Move on. Don't justify.
Can't believe anyone things Patrick Brammal is a better actor than MLN . Have you seen Parer's War. Now that was a dynamic performance by MLN?
ReplyDeleteLeo is the organ recipient. He's got the scar. He's been in Melbourne seeing his specialist. If I wanted to be really morbid, I could say he's rejecting the organ. That would be just too too sad.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Jenny :)!! there's got to be a reason they made such a big show of his scar. I guess we will have to wait and see. Seeing as he turns up on staff a the hospital later, I'm guessing if he has one of Patrick's organs its going well. Gosh that sex scene was awkward.
ReplyDeleteNearly made it tear free through this episode until the Billie and mick break-up, although of course I knew it had to be with Lawrence on the scene. Has Eddie Perfect also left the show then?

ReplyDeleteI have several points.
ReplyDelete1. Am I the only person who gets choked up every time Patrick makes a haunting appearance? Like seriously, I am still very much in mourning! The scene where she is pushing the pram and she looks to her left and he is there holding her hand and pram, and then the screen shifts and shows she is walking alone… I can’t even write about it without getting emotional!!
2. I would just like to say that I find it really annoying how they are trying to get Nina to move on so quickly. Why can’t Nina just be funny with the random situations that arise once you have children? Like to me the only part that they got spot on was the first scene of the first episode where she summarises the last 6 months. I also really think that Chanel 10 does a disservice to its programs with its advertising. They really don’t seem to understand what the viewer wants.
3. What is the deal with Leo? There is no way that he won’t come back into Nina’s life. I agree that he will turn up in the hospital in some shape of form. Also OMG I totally didn’t think about the prospect that he received one of Patrick’s organs!!! He does seem to be very similar to Nina and almost a mirror of what she is like. Hell - in that encounter (overall) she was the cool down to earth one! Can anyone else imagine the equivalent “your sister’s a six” song written about him? I can!
4. Thank god for Kat Stewart! I would actually prefer to see Billie end up with Leo rather than Lawrence. To me (thus far) Lawrence is one dimensional.
5. Alfie continues to be MIA! Seriously – where is that baby???
6. Good casting for Zoe – very cute baby :)
7. Will we see more people in the Offspring mass exit?? So far we have Darcy, Cheree (sp??), Patrick.
8. I want Kate to come back from to Australia! I really loved her character.
9. Predictions – I assume that Zara and Jimmy will get married (as the token happy point of the season) and Alfie will continue to be MIA. I also assume that there will be some drama and the baby will be born on the wedding day or something. Obviously we will have Zoe’s first birthday in there and I assume that will stir up feelings of wishing Patrick was there… A love battle between Lawrence and Leo for Billie’s affection? I agree that Leo has received an organ from Patrick. My left field predictions are that we will see Chris Havel (spelling) again? My final prediction is that Billie will fall pregnant.
10. What I want is some funny Clegg and Noonan and scenes. Less of Jimmy, Zara and Geraldine (only because they annoy me). See Nina deal with the trials and tribulations of motherhood and also her profession (you could be forgiven if you have forgotten that she delivers babies for a living given how much air time that gets!). I want to see Billie out there dating and actually achieving as she had a bit of a rough season last year.
I was so insistent on not watching season 5 so I feel a bit silly writing this but... it's beginning to grow on me. I actually think that the airport scene was done quite well and the fact that Nina couldn't have a meaninigless one night stand was touching. The Leo character would be welcome as a regular and a future love interest for Nina but it really is too soon. I think the writers incorporated this point into the script very well. It is heart wrenching to see Patrick with Nina and you have to really empathise wiith her-you actually want her to move on and find happiness.
ReplyDeleteBillie was incredible and the performances amazing.
I actually enjoyed the episode, not really connecting it to the previous season. That's the way I feel- as if it's a new series in its first season. This way, I'm not critical about season 4. In addition, Patrick's ghost showing up is going to get old really fast. Once you accept the fact that MLN aka Patrick really isn't in the show(well, only in spirit) it makes sense to have new story lines and be open to new relationships in Nina's life.
Yes Fee - I agree with everything except Billie and Leo - she would eat him alive. And not to worry I am a blithering mess when Patrick is on screen. I need his ghost to stop appearing so I can be spared the puffy eyes.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Kim/ Clegg scene. Clegg at his finest and reminded me of the beautifully written squash scene in Season 2.
Shoshie I agree the hotel scene was perfectly done. Her discomfort, thoughts of Patrick and guilt were painfully moving. the" moving on issue" is tricky and rally it might have been better to come back at 12 months post the death as its going to feel very soon to most of the audience if it does happen. The hotel scene was really only possible because of Billie's obsession with Nina's sex life otherwise I think the writers would have struggled with an acceptable way to get that in there.
I really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
