It’s not looking good Offspring, let’s get that out there
right now. Firstly, when you’re compelling and interesting, I cancel plans to
watch and recap you. When you’re drifting – as in Season One – I’ll accept an
invitation to just about anything. Sadly,
it looks like we’re heading down Season One road again, so this recap is going
to be a little different. Less what happened and more what in the hell is going
on right now – I won’t be offended if the less cynical (and God sometimes I wish
I was) headed to happier, more positive pastures.
The good news first: shirtless Patrick is still PHWOAR |
Okay, what in the hell is going on! Seriously, Nina Proudman
you are the most scatty illogical, dependent person. This entire episode seemed
to revel in your ditzy behaviour. How endearing the stuttered speech patterns
were, the physical hijinks, the blatantly stupid ways to entertain a toddler. The horrible scene in which she confronted
Little Intern and waved her arms as if she was a mute trying to express herself, was neither
endearing nor funny. It simply made me wonder how a grown woman, who the show claims
to have a professional career is able to function when she can barely walk down the
street without overt physical expressiveness bordering on mania.
What this episode sadly made me think about – and not in a good
way – is what exactly do you and Patrick, besides hotness and inner city
coolness, and professional vocation – have in common. Seriously, I’ve never
seen Nina and Patrick, with sex removed, really enjoy each other. I understand
we’ve been buried in angsty town for a few seasons but right now, I’m really
struggling to understand what Patrick sees in Nina aside from the fact she is carrying his child. What this also does, is drag Patrick down into this behaviour. For someone who has taken great strides
in growth and evolution, his insensitivity to Nina about his night out with
Little Intern was staggering. He knows she is a nutcase, would stew
ridiculously if he was 20 minutes late and by choosing to be with her, chooses
this relationship structure. SO FREAKING CALL the poor woman and say, 'Hey,
taking longer than I thought, don’t worry, I’m okay, I’ll be home soon, love
you etc'. Not hard to do, and I resented him for not doing it.
The whole Little Intern thing is a bit of a missed opportunity
for me right now as we seem to be back to bringing up danger Patrick to illicit
danger without punishing the character in the present. They don’t want him to
be currently flawed, only have viewers remember the hint it’s there. And the
continuity regarding drinking continues to frustrate me. Season Two Patrick had
no problems with a glass. I’m fine if Patrick feels that drinking does open him
up to demons, but the story has to convey his decision to change somehow.
Whether the viewers see him speaking independently with the counsellor man, and
talking about his evolution or to another character – we need to know he’s not
just flipping a switch and being a douchebag.
And don’t even get me going about the Cherie character. I
have no patience, sympathy, tolerance or understanding of how this character
continues to bounce from life experience to life experience all while leaving a
wake of confusion and complications. The only reason her friend Nina, hasn’t
called her on her ditch and run the second it’s slightly mundane pattern is because she’s
too bizarrely stunted herself.
Comic relief heavy lifting for Billie this week, but for a character
empowered last week with her growth to become an adult, they sure cut the legs out from under her with the photo shoot shenanigans. Mick is clearly atoning for
last season’s Fiesty mess with his role this season to be Billie’s support team
– if only this could involve more actual character development for him.
The mother suffering mother guilt plot with Zara was good
but poorly explored. Zara has always been a complex character and I’m surprised
the show didn’t let her deal with the two options in life a little longer. Why
couldn’t she actually enjoy her job (because I sense she would) but still be
missing Alfie? I hate to put this on her, but why couldn't she be (incorrectly) ashamed about her desires completely changing. This was a strong, fiercely independent woman who wanted no support emotionally and was determined to have her life remain the same. Yes, that's a pipe dream and of course, she was always going to change, especially thanks to her relationship with Jimmy and that is a wonderful thing and a great story to tell. But can we actually see that growth in more detail and on screen instead of speeding through this decision, in what equated to 10 minutes on screen.
Mama Proudman gets nothing but a SHUT UP from me. Who cares
what Darcy does, you should be happy, you’ll be able to crash his spa without
awkward multiple lovers nakedness.
This is sadly, a particularly ranty recap from me, I’m sorry
to say. Nina is the centre of the Offspring universe and when she’s off in this
hyper eccentric zone, it drags the entire show down with it. Other characters
have to heighten or lower to the extremes just to match it and I think this is
a grave error. I enjoy the writing on Offspring from a unique episode
standpoint, but what always seems to let it down is the commitment to the characters
development and growth. Right now we seem to be aiming for a quota each episode
of zany, hot sexy times, shirtless Matt Le Nevez and crazy Proudman hijinks.
When Offspring got a two season order – I was hopefully this would mean more
concentrated storytelling, a far stronger characterisation for everyone
including secondary players like Martin Clegg – who is getting absolutely
shafted this season. Sadly, it looks like Offspring is playing to its negatives
and not positives and much like Patrick, I think I need a drink.
Sort your needy, whiny, erratic shit out Nina! |
Positives:
Both Belle’s Diner (featured in the stupid Darcy, Cherie,
Nina catch up) and Everleigh Bar (where Patrick and Little Intern had a drink
and also the fantasy movie Nina watched on TV) were featured tonight. Belle’s
Diner does the best fried chicken ever – like an awesome, gourmet KFC , or as
if you were invited to a friend’s family’s home in Louisana for Thanksgiving. Do
get the mashed potato and gravy with it – it’s comfort food at it’s cool inner
city hipster best.
Afterwards, go upstairs to the Everleigh Bar and let their
amazing cocktail staff create a drink for you based off what type of alcohol
you normally drink. I did and the drink they served me – multiple times – was amazing. Also, thanks to the 20’s feel, you’ll feel
super fancy and cool but be warned, weekends are tricky to get tables in the
evening and you might have to perch at the bar, which slightly lessens the
fancy feel.
Few comments here unlike last season!
ReplyDeleteThat bad, huh?! I think I might give Offspring a miss and stick to your recaps. S3 was weak but I didn't expect S4 to descend into parody. For their sake I hope they at least have a scene where Nina impresses Intern with her professional skills.
Also I know Matt being sexy is now part of the show but.....some of the facebook comments on the shirtless scene made me think of horny boys who post youtube comments.
I must be watching a different show - loving Offspring this season. Nina is pregnant, hormones haywire leading to same types of erratic behaviour shown by many pregnant women a -ever heard of baby brain? She will get overit. Patrick is magnificent this season and I do not meet the shirtless scenes. He so much wants a child and is really trying to be supportive of Nina, sure he has lapses like not calling to say he will be home late but is showing real character development in my view. Also loving storylines of extended family. And Eloise is a device to enable Patrick to come to terms with his past
ReplyDeleteI am dissapointed thus far by this season. What happened to the honest emotional moments of seasons past? When Billy found out Nina was pregnant? The HOT sex scene where mini Nina/Patrick was concieved? The moment where Billy was singing into the mirror? Patrick being a smartass? Dr Noonan meeting Patrick for the first time?
ReplyDeleteTo me the episode is lacking that feeling of genuine emotionnal connection for me.
The only thing that I welcome so far is the addition of the spunky therapist. Oh and the scene where Patrick was making furniture.
I have two words for Nina - grow up. And I've had baby brain 3 times (you could probably say I never really recovered the first time) and never behaved like nina. Nor did any of my friends. I understand making aspects of life comical for entertainment. But season 4 is not comical, it's farcical.
ReplyDeleteI still love it, and I'm not remotely ready to give it up yet, but I too have cringed several times this season. I can't remember what she was flapping her hands about, but in one scene Nina invoked memories of the season 3 finale where she gets flustered talking to Cherie and Billie then runs off to talk to Patrick. It felt stale, and like Asher Keddie was following a formula that worked on a previous occasion. There've been a couple of such occasions where it felt like they were just repeating stuff with a slight change because the formula worked before, like the scene where Cherie shares her dilemma with Martin, or the phone call between Kate and bike dude (someone made the Reid DNA comment about that I think?). But perhaps if I hadn't watched seasons 2 and 3 about a million times each it wouldn't bother me so much!! I had a look at Michael Lucas' recent tweets and he suggested in one that Nina will get less annoying. At least I hope that's what he's suggesting!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest I feel like they've tried to give the readers of this blog a lot of what they wanted at the end of season 3! The only thing I've been surprised by so far is the road trip - assuming those 2 main characters do end up leaving the show, at least for a while.
Just saw ep 3. Yes I agree that they have been paying attention to the viewers wants in making S4. Somehow it hasn't come together-as Felicity says its more like making sure the quota of moments is there. I thought Asher could do no wrong but so far S4 hasn't seen her in good form which doesn't help given she is the lead.
DeleteI guess it depends and everyone has a favourite season/eps. For me it was S2.
I still love it and won't give it up either. I loved episode 1 but episode 2 and 3 were a bit disappointing mostly due to the intensity of Nina's neurosis. I have to admit I didn't watch the last moments after the final ad break as I lost interest which I have never done whilst watching Offspring. Its completely ridiculous for Patrick and Eloise to go out for a drink in that situation - I started to think I hate this storyline so much I don't care how late he is. The arm flapping scene was appalling. She is in her workplace and is Eloise's superior. I think we need to see Nina having some professional dignity - even if its messy in her head she should be behaving with dignity on the outside with a much junior colleague.
ReplyDeleteOne of the things I find in offspring is they seem to like to wrap the characters storylines up within an episode and sometimes it feels too quick - eg Zara's work guilt is easily soothed within the episode by extremely sensitive jimmy on her first day at work instead of exploring it over a few episodes. It wouldn't hurt to let stuff build.
Hopefully less arm waving next week.
Great to read your posts Emily and comments by SombreFilly, M, Emmerrr, Fee etc. I look forward to these as much as the show!
ReplyDeleteI'm still loving it, but Neurotic-Nina is really annoying me, especially in the workplace. I'm clinging to Michael Lucas' comment on Twitter that she evolves through the pregnancy, because she surely can't continue this nuts.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else notice the subtle changes to the opening credits? They've moved Lachy Hulme's name up, and presumably have to remove both images & names of Deb Mailman & John Waters in next couple of weeks, could be interesting - hoping they give Martin Clegg more to do than just comic relief.
Thrilled things going well for Kate, and we're seeing more of her, presumably things won't continue smoothly for her & Joseph, surely dramatic storyline to come.
Loving the Mick & Billie happy couple, love the dynamic between those 2.
I did think the storyline with Zara deciding not to work full time was done well, if brief, in my experience (I have 2 children & work part time) it's very common to have to adjust your "pre baby ideas" after reality of baby arriving. Now to see how Jimmy steps up, he does not have a good track record with employment.
I agree with Felicity's frustration about lack of continuity with Patrick's drinking across the seasons. Little Intern guilts him into a drink and then - well what? What effect did that have? Was that why he opened up to little intern, he can't really talk unless slightly tipsy? Did Nina realise he's had a drink when he got home? After the drunken confrontation on Nina's doorstep last season, this "one drink" should have had big significance, but the writers did nothing with it.
I did like how Lawrence infiltrated Nina's mind in a couple of scenes between her and Patrick, very amusing.
Patrick in a towel, and the black & white movie scene - oh wow, just wow. Twitter went into meltdown!
And did anyone notice the gap in continuity when Patrick got home, and he and Nina had the chat in the living room - no portacot and no baby Isabella (I assumed she must have been collected by Kate, even though Joseph had said on the couch to Kate "your daughter's not here tonight?").
ReplyDeleteBut when the text message came through, Nina picked up Patrick's phone saying "in case it's Kate, missing Isabella" implying the baby was staying the night?
In regards to the missing baby,I just presumed that N & P have more than one bedroom, and that's where Isabella was. Wasn't too worried after the towel scene...
DeleteAll was definitely right with the world after that scene!
DeleteHello! So until now I didn't have any strong enough feelings to share here (this season) but now I have to say, I completely agree with you :(
ReplyDeleteNina had already started toeing the line between endearing awkwardness and actual neuroticism last season, but it really does feel like full blown insanity now. Asher Keddie is such an amazing actor, and yet I feel like she's unfairly being reduced to poor written physical "comedy". Not only can Asher Keddie do much more that, so can Nina. And I (mostly) always loved Nina so this is actually so sad and frustrating.
However, I am curious to see where they take this "Little Intern" thing. Judging from that Moving In app, they've got stuff planned for her and I'm interested to see her friendship with Patrick. Only because I feel like it may bring further insight into Patrick's character; NOT because I want to see a love triangle and Nina-style jealousy (because oh god jealousy is frustrating enough but Nina-jealously will most definitely result great head to desk contact on my part).
The only thing that made me happy about this episode was a) the Patrick scenes and b) the fact that Cherie is finally leaving the goddamn show. As you have put it so eloquently in the past, she is truly nuts. And poor Martin Clegg deserves better!
That being said, I have loved the show far too intensely to give up on it, so I'm just gonna cross my fingers and pray the Eloise storyline is good and Nina calms down. That's all I'm asking for (:
Another thing i would like to discuss is the situation around the intern "dobbing" on Patrick and her behaviour towards her staff. Are you freaking kidding me?? Can Nina please show some professionalism?
ReplyDeleteMy predictions on the intern situation are the following.
1. She has a crush on Nina and wants to break them up.
2. She is going to become good friends with Patrick, Nina will get paranoid, but it will be legitimately nothing to it.
Oh I would also like to see therapist in a *cough* romantic setting.... Is there a single Proudman or associate in the house????
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with this, the writers are straight up pandering and have turned the show into a parody of itself, I mean I still love it, but it has seriously strayed.
ReplyDeleteI think the main thing about this season that's driving me insane is everyone's attitude to Eloise's role in Patrick's drug addicted past.
That a newly minted intern had the guts to turn in a superior for his insanely dangerous habit is an act of bravery and awesomeness that deserves to be recognised.
Thanks to her he was stopped before he killed someone (he's the anesthetist for god's sake, I thought the drugs were considered the most dangerous part of any surgical procedure?)or committed a huge stuff up and ended up being charged for negligence.
But the entire lot of them, including people who should completely get the whole duty-of-care angle like Eloise herself it seems? seem to think she's in the wrong and owes him some kind of penance.
It's Madness. Okay, Rant over.
More Kate, less lovesick Clegg, more Clegg generally, they need to show Asher more in her work-mode again just to reassure us she is a sane person
I'm going to put my EPISODE 4 comments here, while they are fresh in my head, I can move them later when Felicity posts her recap.
ReplyDeleteLoved it! I'm going to ignore everything that happened inside the hospital because not a single one of them is professional, but the good stuff, for me, wow:
More Reid storylines - Kate & her new man & Patrick as Army Dad & Kate having to talk about her Ex - fabulous.
Billie & Mick - loving seeing them happy & supportive together, & loved the phone reference check for Jimmy.
Clegg & Patrick & Kim - more of the Patrick/Clegg Bromance, with nice dollop of Kim, in the bowling alley.
I'm hoping with Cherie out of the way, we'll now get decent storylines for Clegg.
Loved the bit of Zara we got at the pub at the end, helping Billie talk to Jimmy, also yes the Pub, I felt we didn't get enough of the pub last season.
Excellent work Michael Lucas (who wrote this episode)!!
Yes - I agree Lou. Episode 4 was a much better episode. I think the Kate and Joseph story line was just lovely and the door step scene so beautifully done.
DeleteAnd the Jimmy and Billie scenes - even my husband enjoyed these and he has little tolerance for offspring as a rule.
I am hoping Patrick's parents will be part of Season 4 - actual parents not just a phone call scene . the scene's with Mick's mum were great back in season 2 - I think would help flesh out Patrick and Kate's characters more.
Loved episode 4 , especially loved seeing Patrick as brother and friend as well as Nina's bloke and yes I believe we will at least be seeing dad at some stage according to a recent Matt le Nevez interview
ReplyDeleteEpisode 4 was my favourite by far this season. It felt far more authentic and not forced. There were some legitimately great moments there. Lets hope it doesn't chance for the worse tonight as it seems that intern/Nina/Patrick issue appears to be the focus if the ads are to be believed.
ReplyDeleteI really want to thank Dr Emu for saving my marriage. My wife really treated me badly and left home for almost 3 month this got me sick and confused. Then I told my friend about how my wife has changed towards me then she told me to contact Dr Emu that he will help me bring back my wife and change her back to a good woman. I never believed in all this but I gave it a try. Dr Emu casted a spell of return of love on her, and my wife came back home for forgiveness and today we are happy again.
